“Punk rock is the freedom to create, freedom to be successful, freedom to not be successful, freedom to be who you are...it’s freedom!”
— Patti Smith

How it began

The half marathon runners were running in the opposite direction to the marathon runners along the coastal path. Jimmy was smashing the half marathon whilst Rhodri was digging deep running his first ever marathon. They’re not sure who spotted who first, but instinctively they both raised their left hands and smacked a high five as they passed each other. Two old friends and bandmates who hadn’t spoken or seen each other in a long time re-united and connected in a moment of support and admiration.

After that, they connected online through Strava, Facebook and Instagram, offering support and celebration on their running challenges and achievements. They watched each other flourish and develop as better human beings, soon realising they were on very similar journeys.

Neither were your traditional runner. They took a more punk rock approach to their running, not wanting to conform, running alone for most of the time, running for the freedom and escapism with a ‘do it yourself’ attitude and simply not wanting to fit in. But, both understood how powerful running can be in helping people not just physically but mentally and wanted to pass that on and help others alike.

They realised that there must be more people like them out there – people who don’t fit into the traditional running club scene, people who lack the confidence or who suffer with demons, people who’ve never considered running, musicians, artists, the alternatives among us…the people who would benefit from what running offers the most.

And so Running Punks was born through the love of music, running with a slice of punk rock attitude thrown into the mix as well! They set out with a goal helping others to make improvements to their lives through running and to be awesome unique individuals!
